Kentucky/Barkley Lakes Fishing Report

The forecast for the lakes area for the holiday weekend looks good although hot with temperatures in the low 90's. There is a heat advisory out for today and the 4th with heat indexes approaching the 100 degree mark, so make sure you take plenty of drinking water when you go out on the lakes this weekend.
The Largemouth Bass are on solid summer patterns with fish being taken shallow early and late in the day in the bays on topwater lures, Texas rigged plastics, soft jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, and small crankbaits. These fish are especially active near grass beds and wood cover. The primary pattern is fishing creek and river channel ledges and humps near the mouths of the bays and on the main lakes. These fish are being taken on deep running crankbaits, Carolina rigged plastics, and jignpig. Some good catches are being taken on the ledges, especially during periods of current generation.
The Smallmouth Bass are being taken during the day early and late on topwater lures, Texas rigged plastics, and small crankbaits in the bays on Kentucky Lake near grass beds on secondary pea gravel points. The primary day pattern is fishing the ledges and humps on the main lakes with deep running crankbaits, Carolina rigged tubes, and jignpig. The Smallmouth are also being taken on the LBL side of Kentucky Lake at night by fishing chunk rock secondary and main lake points using slow rolled dark spinnerbaits, jignpig, and Carolina rigged tubes.
Some of the productive lures reported this week are: Zara Spook in natural shad colors, Lucky Craft Sammy in american shad and chartruese, Yozuri chug bait in chartruese, Rebel Pop R in black/chrome, Poe's crankbaits in Tennesse Shad, Strike King Fat Free Shad in natural shad, Rapala DT16 in bluegill, Norman DD14 and DD22 in blue/chartruese, Tennesee Shad, and white, Berkley 10" power worms in blue fleck, Zoom 8" lizards in black/red and watermelon/red, Zoom brush hogs in watermelon red, Hook Some Bass brush hounds in green pumpkin and watermelon/purple, and Hook Some Bass spinnerbaits in black and purple, and Hook Some Bass jigs in black/blue.
The White Bass are very active at the mouths of the bays and near river channel ledges with some jumps now being reported although not of long duration. These fish are being taken by casting small spinners such as roostertails, small spoons, and popping baits into the feeding schools. During periods of low top feeding activity these fish are being taken by vertically fishing the ledges with small spinners and spoons as well as by trolling the same lures behind a crankbait along the ledges and near the mouths of the bays.
The Bluegill are very active, especially near the willow fly hatches early and late in the day. These hatches are also producing some white bass as well as an occasional Largemouth. Look for these hatches near willow trees along the shore on both lakes. Aside from fishing the willow fly hatches, you can find active bluegill around docks and along deep rocky creek channel banks. These fish are being taken on crickets and worms fished under bobbers.
